Our visit

This is our second visit, the earlier being in the Spring this year. The Twyford Lock is an historic canal lock maintained by the Canal and River Trust, a good starting point for a riverside trail towards Spellbrook Lock or Bishop's Stortford town centre. It is a level walk with welcome shade in many parts on the hot summer's day that we walked it.

We love the juxtaposition of nature along the gentle flowing river and its banks of wildflowers with the low flying aircraft along the flightpath only minutes away from landing in Stansted airport, a bonus for airplane spotters!

Bishop's Stortford is a very interesting town on the Herts/Essex border and we highly recommend visiting the museum which is located in South Mills Arts centre, which also has a very nice bar!

On this occasion, we travelled back to Maldon via nearby Sawbridgeworth and enjoyed a visit to the wonderful Herts & Essex Antiques Centre at The Maltings on the outskirts, next to the railway station. Most of the individual antiques businesses offer free parking for their customers. There is also a lovely cafe, The Shed, offering drinks and quality food, which we recommend.

Another great day out!

Good to know

The nearby free car park is much appreciated. However, there are no toilets nor even waste bins, so be prepared to take your litter home with you!

Getting around

It was a riverside walk on a well-trodden path. However, it was uneven and narrow in places and, therefore, not ideal for wheelchairs or anybody who may be unsteady on their feet.
